Why are you Following Jesus? Exhortation

Following Jesus

Are you following Jesus for the right reasons? Find out.

After Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane, He was led by soldiers to the gathering of the priests, scribes, and elders. All his disciples fled and departed from him except Peter.

Peter took a faithful and courageous decision, he chose to follow Jesus. His choice to follow Jesus was good, but something however was missing to make it perfect. The last phrase of the gospel according to Matthew chapter 26 verse 58 tells us his purpose for following Jesus.

‘But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest’s palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.’

This purpose of ‘to see the end’ explains the shortcomings that Peter had on the way of following Jesus that day. He had to lie three times to save his head.

It even got to a point when he started cursing himself, all to save his life. He couldn’t stand the temptations, he couldn’t hold on to the Spirit of truth. His actions was not directed towards Jesus by any means, he was only struggling to save his head. He denied ever knowing Jesus good times.

Many Christians today are in the same shoes as Peter’s, we follow Christ for the wrong purpose(s). Jesus turned back one day and rebuked the multitude because they were only following him for the food he was willing to provide.

Some people follow Christ for pleasure because He is said to be loving and kind. We follow Christ for the gain. We follow Christ to see what will become of Christianity. We follow Christ with this mindset_ peradventure He comes like they always say.

Our purpose for following him determines how far we will go with him in this strange and wicked world we live in.

The true reason to follow Christ is shown in the epistle of Paul to the Philippians, Chapter 3 verse 10

‘that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.’
